5 Highlights you must see in Laos
While most people who venture to the region tend to head to Vietnam or Thailand, Laos has a lot to offer, as well! The country has only recently opened its door to visitors (in 1989 to be exact), so it’s still relativily unknown to the public, but you will surely be amazed when you discover more about the highlights of this unique country.
5 Highlights you must see in Laos:
Vientiane
This is the largest city in the country and it is also the location of Thailand’s embassy. The city has a vibrant food scene and while the roads can be long and winding, there are a wide range of interesting sights to see. You can head to the enchanting Mekong riverside break to grab a drink and relax, plus you are able to watch one of the most beautiful sunsets that you will ever see if you are willing to properly time your trip!
Vang Vieng
There are many who may already know this city, since it was once a prime location for visitors who wished to indulge in magic mushrooms and opium. However, the area has since regained a more peaceful vibe and is now known for outdoor adventure. Those who enjoy kayaking, hiking, tubing and spelunking in various caves have a large number of options available. Just be sure to follow the rules that have been put in place to eliminate accidents on the water.
Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang is the second largest city in Laos and is considered to be the cultural heart of the nation. Its unique blend of French colonial buildings and traditional Laotian wooden houses provides a visual feast for foreign visitors and those who consider themselves to be architectural buffs will find endless opportunities to snap beautiful photographs. The city is also filled with quaint cafes and ancient Buddhist temples, so give yourself plenty of time to see all of the sights.
Nong Khiaw
There are those who prefer some simplistic sights and are in search of a more authentic Laotian experience. This quiet little town is one of the more picturesque locations in the country and it is surrounded by limestone peaks that loom high into the sky. Travelers who are looking for a place to take a hiking trek or do some kayaking should definitely add this region to their Laos travel itinerary!
Xieng Khuan
While this location requires a half day journey for visitors who are staying in the nation’s capital, it is certainly well worth the trip. This area contains a gorgeous riverside meadow, filled with towering religious statues (hence also called Buddha Park) and is one of the country’s most visually arresting sights. Simply put, Xieng Khuan is one of the most bizarrely beautiful places in the world!
